beautiful urban canopies in the country, from our iconic moss-draped live oaks to our towering coastal pine trees give our properties character, shade and value.

     However, our coastal environment presents
unique challenges, High humidity, sandy soils and severe weather can leave trees vulnerable to
disease and pests.

     Understanding why trees decline can help you
spot the early warning signs, catching these signs early keep your property safe and keeps
our beautiful coastal canopy thriving for

   1. Fungal Diseases and Structural Decay Savannah’s high humidity and wet seasons create the perfect environment for wood decaying fungi.

     These pathogens often attack
       silently from the inside out:

Mushroom Root Rot (Armillaria):

  This fungus loves weakened trees; it attacks the root system and the base of the trunk severely compromising the tree's structural integrity before you ever see symptoms above ground.

Ganoderma Root and Butt Rot:

   Commonly seen on mature hardwoods in
coastal Georgia, this fungus causes internal wood decay near the soil line. Look for shelf like fungal brackets growing at the base of the trunk.

Hypoxylon Canker:

   This disease targets stressed and injured hardwoods, especially oaks. It kills the bark, causing it to peel away in large sheets and exposing dark, dusty fungal spores underneath.

   2. Aggressive Coastal Pests Insects rarely attack perfectly healthy trees,
Instead, they target trees already stressed by storms, construction or poor soil conditions.

Ambrosia Beetles:

   These tiny pests bore into the trunks of stressed hardwoods, They introduce a symbiotic fungus that clogs the tree's vascular system essentially choking off its water and nutrients.

Pine Bark Beetles:

   If you have pines on your land, watch out for
the Southern Pine Beetle and Ips beetles. They tunnel under the bark and can turn a mature pine completely brown in a matter of weeks.

Laurel Wilt Disease:

   Spread by an invasive ambrosia beetle, this deadly disease has severely impacted red bay and sassafras trees throughout maritime forests
and coastal properties in Georgia.

    3. Environmental and Human Stressors Sometimes, the initial trigger for tree decay comes from weather or routine property
maintenance.
     

Saltwater and Storm Stress:

  Coastal storms can oversaturate soils with saltwater or physically damage tree limbs, creating open wounds where fungal spores and pests can easily enter.

Construction and Soil Compaction:

   Renovating a home, driving heavy equipment over root zones or adding paved driveways crush critical feeder roots, starving the tree of oxygen.

Lawn Care Injuries:

    It is easy to accidentally nick a tree
trunk with a lawnmower or string trimmer,
These small wounds disrupt nutrient flow
and invite secondary infections.
